Accessibility statement for Copim Compass
This accessibility statement applies to all of compass.copim.ac.uk
This website is run by the Open Book Futures (OBF) project, an extension of the Community-led Open Publication Infrastructures for Monographs (COPIM) project which is based in the UK, although works internationally. The website is built using the Bookstack platform.
We want as many people as possible to be able to use this website and have a strong ethical commitment to accessibility, as represented by our Accessibility Work Package.
How accessible this website is
We know some parts of this website are not fully accessible:
-
The Bookstack platform has a known issue with contrast, where links in the sidebar reduce in contrast when they are not being hovered over, reducing their contrast to below the legal minimum. There is more information on this issue here: https://github.com/BookStackApp/BookStack/issues/2634 The software should respect when end users have ‘prefers-contrast’ turned on in their browser. Our project’s developer has added some CSS to all pages to prevent the opacity changing.
-
The nesting that the platform provides between the website title, books and chapters, skips from H1 to H4.
-
Some of the labels parts of the website are tagged with are not optimised for accessibility.

Enforcement procedure
The Equality and Human Rights Commission (EHRC) is responsible for enforcing the Public Sector Bodies (Websites and Mobile Applications) (No. 2) Accessibility Regulations 2018 (the ‘accessibility regulations’). If you’re not happy with how we respond to your complaint, contact the Equality Advisory and Support Service (EASS).
Technical information about this website’s accessibility
Open Book Futures/COPIM are committed to making this website accessible, in accordance with the Public Sector Bodies (Websites and Mobile Applications) (No. 2) Accessibility Regulations 2018.
Compliance status
The website has been tested against the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.2 AA standard, and is partially compliant.
This website is partially compliant with the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines version 2.2 AA standard, due to the non-compliances listed below.
-
Heading levels between the main page header and the books/chapters on the page skip from H1 to H4. Also some of the labels parts of the website are tagged with are not optimised for accessibility. This can contribute towards a failure of:
-
1.3.1 Info and Relationships (Level A)
-
2.4.1 Bypass Blocks (Level A)
-
2.4.6 Headings and Labels (Level AA)
These are limitations of the Bookstack platform that we have chosen to use. We have chosen colours to minimise the effect of the contrast issue but it still remains below legal minimum standards. Long term plans include exploring alternative platforms that are mission aligned with our project values and that also enable full compliance with accessibility standards. We update Bookstack to the latest versions when they are released.
